External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on Tuesday will embark on a visit to Canada’s Ontario to participate in the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting on the invitation of Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand.

During his visit, Jaishankar is expected to hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the G7 engagement with several counterparts, focusing on strengthening cooperation in areas such as trade, technology, and global governance.

The MEA said that Jaishankar’s participation in the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting reflects India’s continued commitment to working with international partners in addressing global challenges and bolstering the voice of the Global South in international fora.

The G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting is being held in Niagara, a scenic region of the country near the famous Falls, on November 11 and 12.

Last month, Canada’s Foreign Minister, Anita Anand, visited India and invited her Indian counterpart to participate in the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting. During the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their intent to rebuild trust and strengthen bilateral relations across multiple sectors.

In a statement issued last week, Global Affairs Canada (GAC), the country’s foreign ministry, said Canada is “pleased to host ministers from several outreach countries, reflecting shared global priorities and partnerships”.

The participants will include India, and a senior official confirmed that Jaishankar will be at the meet and is likely to have a bilateral meeting with Anand, as well counterparts from the other countries.

Other than the G7 nations of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and the European Union, the outreach countries invited are India, Australia, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, South Korea, South Africa and Ukraine.

Before her India’s visit, she met Jaishankar on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 29.

The trip follows the July meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, which laid the groundwork for improving ties that had reached their lowest point during 2023–24.
